Travel Inspiration: The Caribbean

Escaping to the Caribbean is always on my travel list. Is it on yours? I’m so excited to have 3 Caribbean cruises planned for 2019 visiting Bahamas, U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Martin, and Puerto Rico. Until then, tropical drinks and foods will keep the dream alive.

When you think of the Caribbean it’s tough not to think of rum (you can blame The Pirates of the Caribbean for that!) and when you think of rum, it’s even tougher not to think of BACARDÍ®. It’s the rum we keep in stock in our bar at home.

On my bucket list of places to visit is Casa Bacardi in Puerto Rico. We plan to go when we stop in San Juan during our cruise. We can’t wait to enjoy a cocktail at the waterfront Bat Bar Pavilion and learn about the rum making process and the family history on their guided tour. Of course, we will end with some fantastic Puerto Rican food!

Here’s Everything You Need for an Epic Halloween Party Inspired By The Tropics:

Your Bar

This BACARDÍ® Spooky Voodoo Rum Punch recipe is easy to make and the colors add to the Halloween theme. Make it your signature drink! You also want grab-and-go cocktail options for your guests where everyone can be a mixologist.

Stock your bar with BACARDÍ® Superior Rum (a 1.75 mL is party size!), assorted fruit juices in carafes, mini cans of Coke® and Sprite®, a bottle of bitters, ice and voila! You’re party-ready in no time!

The Rum: BACARDÍ®

BACARDÍ® rum has been our go-to rum for years. It’s no surprise it’s preferred around the world because it’s so versatile to create fun cocktails to celebrate any occasion. BACARDÍ® Superior rum is a light rum which blends with any mixer to create a classic Mojito or my fruity Voodoo Rum Punch. The flavor does not overpower like gin or become invisible like vodka. BACARDÍ® Gold rum is great in a classic Cuba Libre. The BACARDÍ® Ocho Reserva rum makes for a fantastic rum Old Fashioned. And if you truly want to amp up that tropical cocktail, a floater of BACARDÍ® Black or Oakheart Spiced rum will do the trick!

The Fruity Mixer: Tropical Fruit Juices

Passion fruit juice has a bright sweet-tart quality that’s incredibly refreshing. A bit of orange juice will add to the fruitiness of the drink. The beauty of this cocktail is that you can also add other juices like guava or mango to give it even more tropical notes. Your ratio of rum to mixers should be 1 to 4.

The Fizzy Mixer: Sprite®

The crisp, clean taste of Sprite with 100% natural flavors is perfect to add a sparkling touch and a bit of sweetness to cocktails without distracting from the fruit flavors. The mini 7.5 oz cans are my favorite to keep on hand for making cocktails. It’s just the right amount so you don’t end up having it go flat since you’ll drink it all.

The Secret Ingredient: Bitters

Bitters are the key, secret ingredient of many craft cocktails. It adds a little oomph and punches up the flavor making your drink more complex and balanced. Don’t be afraid to use a dash of bitters in your cocktails to give them that touch that your guests won’t be able to put their finger on, but they’ll really love. I used classic bitters made in Trinidad & Tobago. It’s an herbal blend with a touch of clove, tamarind, and cinnamon. You can use any variety you prefer.

The Fun Garnish: Black Sugar

You don’t need the black sugar rim, but it gives this Voodoo Rum Punch its spooky factor! If you can find black sugar use it. If not, buy black food coloring and add a few drops to white sugar. Mash it in until well blended and voila, black sugar!
What makes the black sugar fun, besides making it more Halloween appropriate? Your lips and tongue will turn black! It makes for hilarious selfies.

Food Pairing: Everyone Loves Pizza!

Who can say no to pizza? On Halloween night keep your menu easy so you have more time to chat with friends and pay attention to the trick or treaters coming to your door. Who wants to be stuck in the kitchen and miss all the creative costumes? I picked up a few 16” Pepperoni Pizzas at the club.

To pair with the Spooky Voodoo Rum Punch and give it a tropical flair, I added fresh pineapple, red and orange sweet peppers, jalapeños, red chile peppers and sprinkled with oregano and red pepper flakes. Every bite is a fun surprise as the red chili peppers blend in with the red sweet peppers. You never know if that bite will be sweet or spicy!

At the club, try to find some Party Trays with fresh fruit and cheese ready-to-go, Pumpkin Cheesecake, Halloween Cupcakes and ice cream to round out your Halloween party menu.

Party Decor:

You don’t have to go crazy with decor (unless you want to!). Fun glassware, cocktail napkins and a few other accents is all you need for an easy, fun Halloween party. Add anything with skulls (especially for the pirate theme) and bats, and you’re all set.

BACARDÍ® rum has the perfect tie in to Halloween. Its logo is a bat!

Did you know the bat is believed to be a symbol of good fortune? Legend has it that in the early days (the company was founded in 1862 in Santiago de Cuba) Doña Amalia Bacardí spotted fruit bats inside the family distillery and insisted it be used as their symbol. As large as the BACARDÍ® company has become, (BACARDÍ Limited is the largest privately held spirits company in the world), it is still a family-owned business rooted in tradition. The family went through their share of hardships. They escaped Cuba in 1960 leaving everything they owned including the business behind. They forged ahead and rebuilt operations around the Caribbean and Mexico and the rest is Rum history. Today “the bat remains on the bottle, helping the family survive whatever fate throws at it.” That’s a great message in a bottle (Catch the Pirate theme pun?).

Choose your glassware based on how classy or casual you want to be. A variety of mismatched glasses add to the fun and make it easy for guests to not lose their drink. Check the clearance aisle of most houseware stores for a selection.

Spooky Voodoo Rum Punch Recipe

No one will walk the plank at your party with this bewitching voodoo passion rum punch made with BACARDÍ® Superior rum, passion fruit, and orange juice topped with Sprite rimmed with black sugar for the perfect Halloween touch!

Course: Cocktail, Drinks
Keyword: Halloween, Rum Cocktail, Rum Punch
Servings: 1
Author: Christina Thomas
Ingredients
  • 1.5 oz Light rum (I used BACARDÍ® Superior)
  • 4 oz passion fruit juice
  • 1 oz orange juice
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Splash of lemon lime soda (I used Sprite)
  • 0.5 oz Spiced rum floater (I used BACARDÍ® Spiced)
  • Crushed Ice
  • Black sugar for rim (or white sugar and black food coloring)
Instructions
  1. Fill cocktail shaker with ice, rum, passion fruit juice, orange juice. Give it a good shake until chilled.

  2. Prepare for black sugar rim by adding black sugar to a shallow plate or combine 1/4 tsp. black food coloring to 1 cup sugar and use fork to mix until fully incorporated.
  3. Lightly wet the rim of your glass by dipping in water or juice, or running a lime, lemon or orange wedge around it. Then dip into the black sugar. Don’t wet the rim too much as it’ll cause the black coloring to drip.

  4. Fill glass with crushed ice, strain cocktail mix to about ¾ full.

  5. Top with splash of lemon lime soda.

  6. Make it extra betwitching with a 1/2 oz shot of spiced or dark rum floater.

  7. Add dash of bitters to look like drops of blood on top

  8. Serve and enjoy responsibly
Recipe Notes

As a party time-saver, you can mix all ingredients except Sprite, in a carafe or punch bowl ahead of time and then top with Sprite when serving to give that nice fizz. Don't forget to add the drops of bitters on top.

You don’t have to wait until Halloween to enjoy this tropical libation. It’s great any time of year. Whether it’s hot outside and you want to cool off or it’s chilly and you want to dream of a Caribbean getaway. Mix up this Voodoo Rum Punch and celebrate any day!

I hope you’re inspired to have a deliciously spooky Halloween party with my Voodoo Rum Punch, BACARDÍ® rum, Sprite® and Sweet & Spicy Pizza. Celebrate with friends. Make Someday Happen one delicious bite, sip and trip at a time!
